In general, the term “Topology” is simply a pattern of the interconnecting nodes (system) in a network, and ring topology is just a sub-category of broader term topology.
Briefly, Ring topology refers to a specific kind of network setup in which devices are connected in a ring and pass information to or from each other according to their adjacent proximity in the ring structure.
It may also be called an active topology because messages are passed to each device in the ring.
HOW RING TOPOLOGY WORKS ?
In Ring Topology, all the nodes are connected to each-other in such a way that they make a closed loop. Each workstation is connected to two other components on either side, and it communicates with these two adjacent neighbors. Data travels around the network, in one direction. Sending and receiving of data takes place by the help of TOKEN.
ADVANTAGES OF RING TOPOLOGY –
The following are the main advantages of ring topology –
- The design of a ring topology allows each workstation to control connectivity instead of needing to have a network server.
- Additional components do not affect the performance of network.
- In the ring topology, only one cable connects each node to its neighboring nodes, so no wiring closest space required.
- Ring topology require fewer connections, hence it is easy to install it.
- It is cheap to install and expand.
DISADVANTAGES OF RING TOPOLOGY –
- The diagnosis of a faulty node is difficult in case of a large network .
- Troubleshooting is difficult in ring topology.
- Network is highly dependent on the wire which connects different components.
- The ring topology network is unidirectional which means that each device is dependent on the other. Therefore, the failure of one workstation impacts the entire network.
Thus, in a nutshell Ring topology is a type of network topology where devices are connected in a circular path forming a ring like structure and is most commonly used in Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).
