Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, is an integrated online platform for utility bill payments approved by RBI on 14 June, 2021.
It offers bill payment services to consumers through network of agents/ retail shops/ bank-branches and digital channels like internet banking of banks, mobile app of banks, among others, allowing multiple payment modes like Card, UPI, AePS, wallet, cash and provides instant confirmation.
However, Mobile recharge through BBPS will be allowed from or before August 31, 2021.
HISTORY OF BBPS
BBPS began in 2014 as a platform for automating bill payments for five different types of bills: direct to home (DTH), energy, gas, telecom, and water. The system featured a standardised bill paying experience, a centralised customer grievance redress procedure, a customer convenience fee, and the ability to pay bills online.
STRUCTURE OF BBPS
BBPC will be the tiered structure made up of two separate units. The first type of unit is called Bharat Bill Payment- central unit (BBPCU) and the second type is called Bharat Bill Payment-operating units (BBPOUs). The agents of BBPOUs, payment gateways, banks, billers, and other service providers like issuers of prepaid instruments are the participants in BBPS. The settlement standards established in BBPS with the approval of the Reserve Bank should be adhered to by all the participants.
HOW TO MAKE BILL PAYMENT USING BBPS
Following are the steps which must be followed to make bill payment using the Bharat Bill Payment System :-
- First of all , connect to any internet banking or app of your respective bank or visit a bank or branch or retail shop.
- Then click on bill payment or BBPS Tab.
- After that, choose the category of biller and enter the bill details.
- At last, you need to initiate a payment and get instant confirmation.
Thus, in a nutshell the Bharat Bill Payment System is a one-stop ecosystem for all recurring bills providing an interoperable and accessible anytime, anywhere recurring payment service & is slated to be an efficient, cost-effective alternative to the existing bill payment system in India.
