Get to know whether your credit for your previous AFB paper will be restored in the upcoming JAIIB May 2023 exam or not.
This post is for those IIBF JAIIB candidates who have positive confirmation with respect to:
- You sat for JAIIB Accounts & Finance for Bankers in 2021 or 2022 but cleared only 1 or 2 of the 3 JAIIB Papers?
- And now you don’t understand how your credits earned in previous IIBF AFB Exams will work out in 2023?
- Or are you indecisive about whether or not you should forgo your Accounting & Finance for Bankers credits & register for JAIIB 2023 Exams fresh?
- Or you don’t know about any of the changes that the institute has made applicable for AFB exams from 2023 onwards?
Updates have been made to IIBF’s flagship course (JAIIB) Syllabus for 2023. While some bankers might find adjusting to these changes difficult, others (mostly new candidates/entrants) are just looking forward to the JAIIB 2023. IIBF will soon (probably) change all of its other exams too. Therefore, I wish the best of luck to the candidates who are studying for IIBF Diploma/Certification Courses. You sat for the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance & got credit for AFB in 2022/2021 or another paper but didn’t clear other JAIIB 2022/2021 paper/s:
Now you want to know if your credits can be applied for the JAIIB in 2023 and if yes, then how long those credits will be valid? But in order to offer you a better response, we need to know when you first registered for JAIIB Exams and how many attempts you have exhausted.
Candidates who score at least 50 marks on Junior Associate papers of the Indian Institute of Bankers are given credits by the IIBF. Prior to the implementation of the New (20230 Rules & Syllabus, they used to expire after two years from the date of registration with JAIIB. In other words, you don’t have to retake the AFB, AFB, or LRAB if you registered in JAIIB 2022 or 2021 and scored 50 OR MORE marks in any of the 3 papers. So, you can easily fall into one of the following scenarios:
- You cleared JAIIB AFB only but neither PPB nor LRAB
- You cleared JAIIB AFB & LRAB but not PPB
- You cleared JAIIB LRAB only but neither PPB nor AFB
So, in the above scenarios……
You have been Credited for: | The following papers must be written by you: |
AFB | 1. IE&IFS (Indian Economy & Indian Financial System)
2. PPB (Principles & Practices of Banking) 4. RBWM (Retail Banking & Wealth Management) |
AFB & LRAB | 1. IE&IFS (Indian Economy & Indian Financial System)
2. PPB (Principles & Practices of Banking) 4. RBWM (Retail Banking & Wealth Management) |
LRAB | 1. IE&IFS (Indian Economy & Indian Financial System)
2. PPB (Principles & Practices of Banking) 3. AFM (Accounting and financial management for bankers) 4. RBWM (Retail Banking & Wealth Management) |
- How your credits earned in previous IIBF Accounting & Finance for Bankers Exams will work out in 2023?
That totally depends on the time you registered for the Junior Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers Exams:
If you registered for JAIIB Exams in May 2021:
You are no longer eligible for any of the credits if any, you earned to date & register for JAIIB afresh in 2023.
If you registered for JAIIB Exams in November 2021 (March 2022 postponement):
You can either – ‘give 2 more attempts in immediately next 3 attempts (May 2023, Nov 2023 & May 2024)’ or ‘forgo all credits, if any, & register for JAIIB afresh in 2023’
If you registered for JAIIB Exams in May 2022:
You can either –give 3 more attempts immediately next 4 attempts (May 2023, Nov 2023, May 2024 & Nov 2024) or ‘forgo all credits, if any, & register for JAIIB in 2023 afresh’.
If you registered for JAIIB Exams in Nov 2022:
You can either –‘give 4 more attempts in immediately next 5 attempts (May 2023, Nov 2023, May 2024, Nov 2024 & May 2025)’ or ‘forgo all credits, if any, & register for JAIIB in 2023 afresh’.
You can choose whether to re-register or use your remaining attempts now that you are aware of how many you still have.
- So, whether you should forgo your AFB credits & register for JAIIB 2023 fresh or not?
Whether or not you will be able to find more time for studying in 2023 depends solely on your confidence and the number of attempts you have left. It is certain that you will write Papers 1 & 4 regardless of how things turn out.

My advice?
Having credits is an advantage. Take advantage of them as much as you can & give your best shot at JAIIB 2023. Ultimately, in any specific case, you are going to have either or both of the following:
- Credits will reduce the number of papers you need to prepare.
- Second-time registration fees are less than first-time registration fees.
- What are the changes that IIBF has made applicable for JAIIB AFB exams from 2023 onwards?
The aforementioned details make it very evident that some of the modifications have already occurred. Here is a quick summary of them:
- Non-consecutive writing has been allowed for JAIIB papers
- The no. of attempts one can retain their credits for has been increased to 5.
- There will be 1/4th of negative marks will be given for wrong answers.
- The JAIIB registration period has been increased from 2 to 3 years.
- Some of the modules/syllabus 2023 have been revised, (LRAB) deleted & newly (IE&IFS & RBWM) added (discussed in detail in another article).
- For some of the numerical, candidates will have to enter the answers manually.
- 3rd paper of JAIIB – LRAB paper has been removed from JAIIB 2022 Syllabus.
So, how you should prepare the JAIIB paper for the 2023 Exams?
You now know that JAIIB 2023 is going to be more difficult than it was in previous exams.
Thus, it is better to be ready than not.
My recommendation:
Only after deciding to apply for JAIIB 2023 – should you register!
