CAIIB CENTRAL BANKING MODULE – A: Rationale and Functions of Central Bank

Evolution and Functions of Central Banking:

You will know the Evolution (Theory as well as Practice) of the Central Bank of India (CBI) has gone through and some of the Functions OF CBI & Development of the Central Banks of India in Developed & Developing countries.

Functions of a Central Bank:

Different Functions of a Central Bank such as being a Banker to Government & other Banks, Functions of Monetary Policy, Issue of Currency & Management, Functions of Payment Systems, Regulations, Maintaining Internal & External Values of Currency, Facilitation & supervision of Financial System, Development of Financial Markets, Promotional Functions, Institutions & communication policies, etc. form part of this unit.

Contemporary Issues:

This section focuses on Contemporary Issues such as Desirability, Independence, Autonomy, Credibility, Accountability & Transparency of the Central Bank of India & conflict with Fiscal Policies can be read here in the unit.

CAIIB CENTRAL BANKING MODULE – B: Central banking in India

Reserve Bank of India:

RBI’s Organizational evolution, Constitution and Governance, Major organizational and Functional Developments over time, Recent Developments, and RBI Act are some of the things in this unit.

India-Specific Issues:

This unit discusses specific issues that include the Banking Regulation Act (BR Act), Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), Financial Sector Reforms, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, Other financial regulators and division of functions as well as Institutions that have been set up by Reserve Bank of India; NABARD- National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, IDBI- Industrial Development Bank of India, DFHI, IRBI- Industrial Investment Bank of India, UTI, etc.

CAIIB CENTRAL BANKING MODULE – C: Monetary and Credit Policies:

Monetary Policy:

This unit contains the Objectives of Monetary policy, reconciling dual objectives, the Taylor Rule, Indicators of Policy, transparency of policies, instruments of policy (such as Bank Rates, Open market operations, Cash Reserve Ratio-CRR, Statutory Liquidity Ratio-SLR, etc.), Policy Transmission Mechanism & channels, various lags in policy, etc.

Credit Policy:

This unit focuses on the Objectives of Credit Policy, Policy Theory & Practice, and Instruments of Policy.

Fiscal Policy: 

This unit provides an overview of the Importance of Budgets such as Union Budgets, State Budgets, Finances of Union & State Governments & Finance Commissions, etc.

Striking Balance:

You will see the Striking balance b/w inflation & growth through monetary & fiscal policies.

CAIIB CENTRAL BANKING MODULE – D: Supervision & Financial Stability:

Indian Financial System:

This unit talks about the Market’s Constituents and how they are Regulated and the evolution & supervision of the Indian Financial System.

Financial Stability:

Concepts covering topics relating to Financial Stability are placed in this section like Financial Development Vs Financial Stability, Risks to Financial stability, some of the early warning signals & remedial actions that can be taken, Liquidity & Risk Management in Banks, Basel & Prudential Norms, Role of Supervisor under Basel Norms, Effect of liberalization and Globalization on the Financial Stability, Linkages to International Financial Stability, International standards & codes.
