DEMOGRAPHY

Let’s now examine what the phrase demography means. The scientific and statistical study of population, particularly the size of various populations, their growth, and their organisation, is known as demography. Historical demography, social demography, economic demography, mathematical demography, medical demography, and other fields of demography are but a few.

The demographic characteristics of the rural population should be taken into consideration separately, even though it is not common practice among demographers to study the rural and urban populations separately. This will help to provide a better understanding of the issues in rural development. This is crucial in a nation like India, where rural areas still make up the majority of the population and will do for the foreseeable future.

For less developed nations, where the dynamics of demographic transition directly affect the direction and speed of the development process, studies on population distribution and density gain importance.

Functions of demography:

  • Gaining knowledge about a specific area’s population;
  • To determine what factors are affecting the population in that specific location.
  • To describe the causes influencing population changes; and
  • Researching population trends based on the three parameters mentioned above.

DEMOGRAPHIC FEATURES OF RURAL INDIA

The following standout characteristics of Indian demography:

Population too large for area:

India, one of the world’s most populous nations, ranks second in terms of population after China and accounts for 16.7% of the global population. Still, its land area only makes up 2.42 percent of the worldwide total.

Predominantly Rural Population:

Approximately 72% of the population resides in rural areas. This demonstrates a heavy reliance on rural businesses like agriculture.

Rapid Population Growth:

From 2.22 percent in 1971–81 to 2.14 percent in 1981–91, the average annual exponential growth rate fell. It decreased to 1.9% during the ten years from 1991 to 2001. Even more, expansion has been seen in the towns and cities.

This has happened as a result of the urban centers’ geographic growth and encroachment upon the neighboring villages, which has been caused by the continued influx of people seeking employment and better living conditions in urban centers.

Declining Female Proportion:

India’s population is predominantly male. Throughout the 20th century, the percentage of women fell. More sociological explanations for the family’s lack of preference for the female child may be given.

Infanticide and female foeticide have recently come to light. Without the proper care, the female youngster is more susceptible to disorders brought on by malnutrition. Additionally, many women pass away while giving delivery.

High Ratio of Unemployed:

Only 40% of our population can be categorised as workers, and that number includes people under the age of 15 (child labor). Otherwise this number would be significantly lower. A large portion of the unemployed population in India can be attributed to the country’s high proportion of people under the age of 15 and low rates of female labor force participation.

Uneven Age Structure:

Our population is made up primarily of people under the age of twenty. A sizable young population has its own social, economic, and political ramifications.

Ethnic variety:

Apart from the issues related to its size, the issue of ethnic variety with which the nation was identified has also undermined social cohesion in Indian society, which has negatively impacted the nation’s rate of socioeconomic advancement.

Most significantly, the concentration of religious minorities in the strategically placed periphery areas has repercussions for society, the economy, and politics.
