UNIT 3 of ABM CAIIB 2022: HUMAN IMPLICATIONS OF ORGANISATIONS

Human Behaviour and Individual Differences

Any individual’s behaviour is influenced by several factors which can be included under the following heads:

FACTORS
Environmental Factors: Economic, Social (norms & cultural values), and Political;
Personal Factors: Age, Sex, Education, Abilities, Marital Status, No. of dependants;
Organizational Factors: Physical Facilities, Organization Structure and Design, Leadership, Compensation and Reward System;
Psychological Factors: Personality, Perception, Attitudes, Values. Learning.

 

EMPLOYEES’ BEHAVIOUR AT WORK

When we observe the behaviour of employees at workplaces, there are some basic assumptions which need to be taken into consideration for whatever purpose their behaviour is being studied:

  • Every individual is different from one another.
  • The concept of ‘whole person’
  • There is a cause for how an individual is behaving
  • Every individual has dignity
  • Organisations are also social systems
  • Behaviour of organisation is holistic
  • The organisational members have mutual interest

From the above points, the first four are based on the people, the next ones only organisations & the 7th point is the combination of the first six assumptions.

Because persons differ even though there are certain commonalities among the persons, therefore, it can be said that:

  • Every person is like all other persons
  • Every person like some other persons
  • Every person may not like other people.

From the above point it can be understood that every individual person has some common characteristics which most people have. You may also have some characteristics of other people along with some characteristics which other people might not have and you need that individual.

THEORIES ON THE CONCEPT OF PERSONALITY

There have been several theories by different researchers which explains the concept of personality.

The most popular dimension of personality which is been taken by organisations as well as medical researchers is:

  • Type A and Type B behaviour profiles.

Type A behaviour: An individual who appears to exhibit Type-A behaviour – is generally found impatient and restless with the desire to quickly achieve success and affection.

Type B behaviour: An individual who appears to exhibit Type-B behaviour – is generally found to be more-easy going, less competitive & more philosophical in his/her nature.

Meyer, Friedman and Ray Roseman have also mentioned the following characteristics for- 

TYPE A PERSONALITY:

  • He or she likes to move, walk & eat rapidly, basically restless in his or her nature.
  • Persons with type-A personality are impatient with most of the things, they do not like to eat & are very much impatient with persons who are not impatient.
  • They do multiple things at once, making them multitaskers
  • They try to cover as much as possible (tasks) in less time irrespective of the fact whether everything is getting done or not.
  • They, usually, move on to another thing before completing the previous one.
  • They are often found nervous with their fists clenched and banging on a table.
  • They do not find any time to relax and enjoy life.

TYPE B PERSONALITY:

Persons with type-B personality have opposite characteristics to type-A personality.

  • They are more relaxed
  • They are much more sociable
  • They like to maintain balance in their life.

Erikson has observed that there are eight stages involved in the development process of personality. These theories are based on the state of mind of a person at a given point of time:

Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority

Stage 5: Identity vs. Role Diffusion

Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation

Stage 7: Growth vs. Stagnation

Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair

SOME OTHER IMPORTANT THEORIES

TRAIT THEORY: 

According to the trait theory, it is actually the traits of a person which actually determines the person’s personality and behaviour which comes inherent to a person. Basically, this theory seems that heredity has more of an impact on the personality of a person than the environment.

It also explains that if personality is something which demonstrates the certain traits of the individual.

Even though there are many traits which can be common to most people, there are definitely some other traits which are unique to one person i.e not found in other individuals.

If theory is to be followed, the description of people goes as: Aggressive, flexible, loyal, flexible, cool, pleasant, humorous, impulsive, sentimental and so on.

PSYCHO-ANALYTICAL THEORY (PT): 

The basis of psychoanalytic theory as per Freudian concept is the unconscious, subconscious and conscious nature of personalities. It has been observed by Freud that unconscious pain work is the primary foundation for the personality structure & what comes out of the psychoanalytic elements (such as identity, the ego as well as the superego) is human behaviour and motivation.

SELF-CONCEPT THEORY:

If this theory is to be believed then personality and behaviour are something which an individual determines for himself or herself. Every person has an image of his or her own and most of the time these persons would try that their actions would be consistent with the image they have created for themselves.

This theory has been greatly contributed by Carl Rogers, according to whom, the best way in which we can understand an individual is by understanding the individuals’ internal frame of reference of himself or herself.

As individuals – themselves – are the centre of experience, their self-image is the integral part of how they see themselves as well as how with things others view them.

SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY:

As far as the social learning theory goes, social valuables play the most pivotal role in the personality development of an individual than the biological factors. 

Whatever behaviour is learnt by any person, it is either observed, learnt as well as modified during the process of learning based on the individual’s performance. The process of learning, a person attains his or her valuable skills, attitude and knowledge.
